Matthew Morrison

Matthew Morrison is a PhD Candidate in Sociology at the University of Virginia. He received a BA in French from Augusta State University in 2004 and a MA in Sociology from the University of Virginia in 2008. Matthew’s dissertation examines working- and middle-class gay men’s experiences with online dating. By examining these relationships as they begin online, Matt hopes to uncover how culture, technology, and social class shape romantic experiences. For his MA thesis, Matt examined how psychiatrists and psychologists working with the severely mentally ill negotiate the tension between the cultural ideals of autonomy and self-reliance with the realities of their patients’ need for medical care. His research interests include cultural sociology; intimacy and inequality; and gender and sexuality. Matt also enjoys teaching a variety of topics. He is excited to be part of the Semester at Sea voyage where he hopes to combine his love for teaching with his underdeveloped passion for travel.
