Fall 2019

Canals and The Atlantic
Counselor

Nicole Lacy

Nicole is absolutely thrilled to join the Health Team on her first voyage with Semester at Sea. She spent the last seven years working with college students as a university mental health counselor at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Prior to her work at Carlow, she specialized in the treatment of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Her current clinical interests include the impact of parental personality disorders on children, and meaning-making in trauma recovery.

Nicole earned her BA from Duquesne University, where she majored in Philosophy and Psychology. She went on to earn her MSEd from Duquesne, and became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2012. In addition to her background in mental health, Nicole holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Carlow University. Her essays can be found both in print and online in national publications including The Los Angeles Review and Tin House.

In her spare time, Nicole loves traveling as much as possible. She’s spent a substantial amount of time traveling solo, and thinks that it is a great way to develop confidence and deepen empathy. Nicole looks forward to making meaningful connections with fellow voyagers while continuing to explore the world.
