Oscar Zavala is retiring in June after working 34 years in higher education. The past 29 years has been as a Counseling Faculty member for Santa Barbara City College in California. During that time, he served three 3-yr terms as a Senate representative, four 2-yr terms as the Counseling Department Chair, was Director of the International Student Center (3 yrs) Interim Director of the Transfer Center (1) and member of numerous campus committees. He earned his BA in Sociology from UCSB and an MA in Educational Psychology from CSU Northridge. This will be Oscar’s fifth semester@sea voyage and he will be traveling with his wife, Jill Hurd, who is the Fall, 2017 SAS Dean of Students and his two daughters, Kyla and Emma.
Oscar loves surfing, hiking, playing guitar and pleasure reading. Although he’s going to miss his dog, he’s looking forward to being at sea and traveling again. He looks forward to sharing the journey with the other members of the community, especially the lifelong learners.
