Scott Miller

Sonoma State University

Scott L. Miller is Director of the Writing Center and Professor of English at Sonoma State University, where he has served since 1997. He earned his PhD at The Ohio State University, where he studied the history and theory of rhetoric. His dissertation, a study of the earliest English books on rhetorical theory, involved study in the great libraries of England. While at Ohio State, he directed the Writing Center and served as a Consultant for the teaching of writing across the curriculum. His first professorship took him to the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Miller currently serves as Co-President of the Northern California Writing Centers Association (a regional branch of the International Writing Centers Association) and has served as a Faculty Leader for the IWCA Writing Centers Summer Institute. He has published and presented frequently on writing-center work and has a book in manuscript on the liberal arts origins of writing centers. Most of his scholarly work has centered on theories and practices of play within writing-center settings.
