Stephen Arata is Associate Professor of English at the University of Virginia, where he also held the NEH Mayo Distinguished Teaching Professorship from 2007 to 2010. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D from the University of Chicago. He has published extensively on English literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In addition to producing classroom editions of novels by William Morris, George Gissing, and H. G. Wells, he is co-editor of the Blackwell Companion to the Novel and General Co-Editor of 38-volume Edinburgh University Press edition of The Collected Works of Robert Louis Stevenson. In 1999 he taught as a Fulbright Lecturer at North Eastern Hill University in Shillong, India. He has been invited to deliver lectures in Great Britain, Spain, and Italy. He taught courses on World Fiction and World Poetry on Semester at Sea’s Spring 2011 voyage.
