Stephen Wassell

Sweet Briar College

Stephen R. Wassell is a Full Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Sweet Briar College. He received a B.S. in architecture (1984), a master’s and Ph.D. in mathematics (1987, 1990), and a master’s in computer science (1999), all from the University of Virginia. His primary research focus is the interface between art and mathematics.

Steve has co-authored three books, one with Kim Williams in 2002 entitled On Ratio and Proportion, one with Branko Mitrović in 2006 entitled Andrea Palladio: Villa Cornaro in Piombino Dese, and one in 2010 with Kim Williams and Lionel March entitled The Mathematical Works of Leon Battista Alberti.

Steve’s overall aim is to explore and extol the mathematics of beauty and the beauty of mathematics. He received national recognition in 2012 for excellence in teaching via his selection by The Princeton Review for inclusion in their book The Best 300 Professors. He has extensive international experience in Western Europe, especially Spain, France, and Italy, and he is always looking to travel to new places to experience different cultures, especially the ways in which they incorporate mathematical ideas into art.
