Spring 2019: A Voyage of Discovery
Assistant Dean of Student Life

Tyler Crisman

Dr. Tyler Crisman currently serves as the Director of Residential Education at the University of San Diego.  He has worked in higher education for over 14 years as an administrator in student housing and student conduct, as well as adjunct faculty at New York University, Arizona State University, and the University of San Diego.  Tyler earned his bachelors degree in Journalism at the University of Northern Colorado, his masters degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education at Colorado State University, and his doctorate in Higher & Post-secondary Education Administration from New York University.

Tyler was born and raised in the open plains of Wyoming, went to college in the mountains of Colorado, and discovered everything amazing about himself and the world through living in NYC for nearly 10 years.  Tyler now lives and works in sunny San Diego where he enjoys an active life of surfing, league sports, biking, and generally anything outdoors.  Tyler is fortunate to have extensive international travel experience, including several solo backpacking trips through Western & Eastern Europe as well as Central & South America.  He is thrilled to add many of the destinations for the upcoming voyage to his list of places he’s explored, as well as to be returning to a few amazing places again (be sure to ask him about the time he was mobbed by school children in India for being mistaken for Justin Bieber)!  Most recently he helped co-teach a 3-week ethics course in Auckland, New Zealand.  Tyler has also been to 49 of the 50 United States.  In short, he hasn’t been everywhere, but he’s on his way!

Tyler is beyond excited to be sailing for the first time with Semester at Sea.  He is a strong believer in the power of globally immersive study away experiences for students and knows that he will learn just as much from his fellow Spring 2019 wanderers as they will from the adventure.  Tyler cannot wait to join everyone onboard in filling life with adventures, not things, and having stories to tell rather than stuff to show!
