Zandra Jordan

Stanford University

Zandra L. Jordan is Director of the Hume Center for Writing and Speaking at Stanford University. A trained rhetorician and ordained theologian, she holds a B.A. in English from Spelman College, a M.A.T in English from Brown University, a MDiv from Emory University, and a PhD in English and Education from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining the Stanford community, Zandra was the founding director of the Center for Academic Literacy at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. For several years, she also taught English literature at Andover (Phillips Academy) and introductory and advanced writing at Spelman College.

Over the course of her career, Zandra has worked with hundreds of undergraduate and graduate writers across the disciplines on a wide variety of literary genres. During Semester at Sea (SAS), she is thrilled to offer courses on creative fiction and creative non-fiction, drawing on the wealth of her professional experience as well as her love for compelling stories. Stories that give life to the mundane, that invite readers into worlds that may not be their own and encourage them to re-see the worlds they do inhabit, are most captivating to Zandra. She has had the privilege of hearing firsthand how Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners for fiction and non-fiction have accomplished this in their writing and relishes the opportunity to share these insights and other narrative techniques with SAS.

While this will be Zandra’s first voyage, she has significant experience traveling abroad. As a participant in a Mellon-Mays Faculty Research Seminar in West Africa, a Fulbright Seminar in the Caribbean, and a travel seminar for theologians in the Middle East, Zandra’s pedagogical development has been enriched by traveling and learning alongside a diverse group of professionals. She looks forward to continued growth with fellow SAS voyagers.

In addition to working in higher education, Zandra serves on the preaching/teaching team at University AME Zion Church in Palo Alto. Her ministerial service includes leading the THRIVE Women’s Ministry and holding a weekly devotional call. Zandra is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
