Discover Lisbon – City Orientation

Program Overview
Country: Portugal

Lisbon is a city that inspires poetry and creates its own mythology; Camões, in his great Portuguese epic The Lusiadas, described it as “Princess of the World…before whom even the Ocean Bows.”  Legend holds that its Roman name, Olisipo, derives from that of the Greek hero, Ulysses, who paused here on his voyage long enough to seduce the nymph, Calypso.  Heartbroken at his departure, she changed herself into a serpent whose coils formed the seven hills of the city.  Today, those hills, riding from the broad Tagus River and stacked with tile-roofed houses and pastel palaces like a child’s village of blocks, form a natural setting for a city of unusual character and charm.
