The Missionaries of Charity Center in Calcutta was founded by Mother Teresa in 1950. The center was established to provide support to those in need. Since its foundation, the order has expanded and now comprises 4,500 nuns actively working in more than 600 missions across 133 countries.

The Missionaries of Charity Center here in Kochi runs a home for children with physical and mental disabilities. Nuns at the center also assist other populations in need by distributing essential medicines at six dispensaries in various locations. In addition, the sisters conduct tailoring classes for economically disadvantaged young women in the area, make regular family visits, teach Sunday school, and participate in other parochial activities.

Participants will meet with the sisters at the Missionaries of Charity Center. *Please note that normally to volunteer with this center you need to commit for a minimum of 3 months. Therefore, this visit will be an observation and learning opportunity, but participants should not expect close interaction with children.

Special Note

  • This program involves visiting spaces belonging to vulnerable groups. Participants should thoughtfully prepare for this experience.
