Involvement Fair at Sea: Another Step in the Journey

Written by work study student Kathryn Burch

When over 650 students with vibrant, unique personalities gather together and embrace each other’s presences, they are bound to share common interests. No matter where they may come from or who they may be, they all share the incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the world as their campus. At Semester at Sea, students instantly feel a warm sense of community, which is ultimately amplified due to the on-board activities that the students are able to participate in together. Tonight was a beautiful example of the community of Semester at Sea as the students were able to sign up for a number of various clubs and activities, including The Order of the Phoenix (all of you Potterheads know exactly that two people with an interest in Harry Potter automatically makes them friends), Intramural Sports activities and even fun lessons learning the Tango, just to name a few. Other activities include Leadership opportunities, Career Development clubs, and Health and Wellness events.

Student Abby Thayer from Tempe, Arizona was one of the many students crowded around the sign-up sheets in order to become more involved on the ship. “I am so excited about the clubs and activities that are offered. I didn’t know anyone coming, so I think this will be a great opportunity to meet more people and have fun,” said Thayer with excitement in her voice. Thayer is one of the many students participating in the Extended Family club, which is when students, faculty, and life-long learners are grouped together to form their own humble “family”. The Extended Families meet for lunch before and after the ship docks at the various ports and essentially get to learn about and support each other. Another amazing step in this journey!
