Leading up to the Archbishop’s birthday on October 7, and for one day after, Semester at Sea alumnus Nancy Tietge will be matching up to $7,000 in contributions to the Archbishop Desmond Tutu “Ubuntu” Scholarship Fund. The “Ubuntu” scholarship supports students who were born on the continent of Africa and are sailing on a full semester voyage.

“I come from a family where education, service, and diversity are honored,” said Tietge, a Fall 2010 and Summer 2014 Lifelong Learner. “My experience was amazing , life-changing in many ways. ‘The Arch’ was a presence throughout our voyage, both light-hearted (a great laugh!) and a soothing soul in our time of sadness. More than that, his influence on 600 college age students impressed me profoundly. He and I were among those invited to sit on a panel to share our ‘wisdom’ for a class on aging. His confession/realization about post-apartheid South Africa has stayed with me: ‘It is easy to tear something down; far more difficult and time-consuming to create something new and better.’ So I wanted to create something new to honor ‘The Arch’ and his wisdom but also to grow the African student community for the annual ‘Around the World’ voyage. Ubuntu seemed fitting. As it turns out, it honors my family as well.”
