Remembering Abby Vieira

Abby, center in chair, posing with Fall 2018 Voyagers after Neptune Day.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our joy filled friend and fellow voyager, Abby Crumpacker Vieira, on August 22. While she fought cancer three times over the course of her life, our fun, humor-filled, people-loving Abby never let it stop her from exploring the world and being the best friend to everyone that crossed her path. Abby and Bob sailed seven times, with their most recent voyage being fall 2018.

We want to remember and celebrate Abby’s life and the almost four decades she spent as one of the queens of Semester at Sea, building an unmatched legacy. If you are reading this, you have no doubt seen and lived this legacy and have been impacted by the life of Abby in some way. And if you were lucky enough, you intimately know the power of one of Abby’s famous hugs!

We have set up a space for all of us to share our collective memories, photos, videos, and stories of Abby with her and Bob’s three children and their extended family via a KudoBoard. We each know the impact that Abby had on our individual lives and the larger Semester at Sea community. Let’s share that impact with her family.

Via the KudoBoard link below, you can share photos, videos, text-based messages, etc. On September 10th we will share this with Bob and the family. Please share this note and request far and wide with all of Abby and Bob’s fellow voyagers, Semester at Sea family, and crew so that everyone who wishes can participate.

In lieu of flowers, her family is asking former voyagers to consider supporting the Vieira Family Scholarship Fund with Semester At Sea, which will continue to provide students the opportunity to sail with SAS that otherwise would not be able to do so.

Find the KudoBoard link to leave a message here, and the Semester at Ea Vieira Family Scholarship Fund link, here.
