Vicarious Voyage

Welcome to the Vicarious Voyage Program

Our mission is to educate and empower youth through cultural awareness in order to develop global leaders of tomorrow.

To achieve our mission, we ask for your help in creating a partnership between Semester at Sea voyagers and K-12 schools.

Each semester, K-12 teachers and their classrooms are invited to partner with a voyager on Semester and Sea and share in their experience. Since Vicarious Voyage began in 1991, more than 45,000 K-12 students in over 1,500 classrooms across the nation have experienced the journey from afar. After learning about the world through the Vicarious Voyage Program, many of these students have since gone on to college, have traveled abroad, or even sailed on a Semester at Sea voyage themselves!

The Vicarious Voyage program offers a personalized experience where each classroom is partnered with a voyager on the ship for their entire voyage. These partnerships facilitate project-based learning and cultivate a sincere relationship between the voyage volunteer and classroom.

Dear Emily, My name is Lily. I’m the one in class that always asks, 'Did we get an email from Emily yet?' I love hearing about your trips. They are very exciting! My favorite places you’ve been so far are Vietnam, India, Ghana, and South Africa. I have always wanted to visit India and the Taj Mahal. When we get your emails, I always say to myself, 'Wow, I want to do this!' I am 11 years old. If you could, would you do Semester at Sea again? If so, would you want to go to the same ports or different ports? I am excited to see you when you come to visit!

Ever since I can remember coming to my mom’s classroom, she would talk about her vicarious voyagers and show me all the cool pictures. I had seen my mom’s pictures from her Fall 85’ voyage, but I didn’t really understand what it meant for another couple years until I was a 4th grade student in her class...Since those days in my mom’s fourth grade classroom, I always knew I wanted to travel.
