Begin by flying to Beijing, the capital city of China, and start your explorations at Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world, and historical site of famous political protests in 1989. Walk through the Forbidden City, home to 24 emperors after its completion in 1420, and observe what is arguably the best-preserved example of classical Chinese architecture. End the day with a rickshaw ride through the hutongs, or narrow lanes, before learning how to make the Chinese dumpling, Jiaozi, with a local family. The next day you will visit the Temple of Heaven, where you will see local residence doing morning exercises. The afternoon will be at the Great Wall of China, where you will take a cable car up to the top and then have time to walk along a portion of the longest man-made structure in the world.

The group will then fly to Hong Kong, which was governed by Great Britain for decades, but retained many traditional Chinese features. Visit some of the monuments, heritage buildings and historical sites that help give Hong Kong its unique atmosphere. Explore the famous local markets including the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, Flower Market, and Jade Market. Cat Street was once notorious for seamen’s lodging houses and hideouts for criminals. The Man Mo Temple dates back to 1847 and is the oldest temple in the city. Next, visit to Aberdeen, home to hundreds of people living on fishing junks juxtaposed against a modern high-rise community. Enjoy a sampan ride to get a close-up look at this unusual way of life. Ride the tram up to Victoria Peak for a birds-eye view of the city before taking the funicular tram downhill. End your orientation of Hong Kong with a walking tour that passes by some of the major historical buildings. On the final day, fly back to Shanghai and return to the ship.
