Be inspired and motivated by this progressive women’s empowerment initiative.

This field program provides a great cross-cultural exchange opportunity in a village near Kochi town – Chendamangalam. Here you will learn about the state of Kerala’s holistic rural development program, Kudumbasree. Started in 1998, their mission is to eradicate poverty in rural areas through teaching women skills like organic farming, weaving, and handicrafts.

Kudumbasree is built on the belief that “Women have a vital role to play in environmental management and development and their full participation is essential in achieving sustainable development.” This empowerment group is comprised of economically-disadvantaged rural residents that save and place money in a communal fund. These funds are managed communally and distributed out to group members as micro-loans, allowing members to start their own ventures, make an income, and lift themselves out of poverty.

Additional activities throughout the day will include: witnessing a traditional folk dance, enjoying a Keralan meal in a banana leaf, learning about handloom weaving, taking a walk through the village, and interacting with locals.
