Through a partnership with African Leadership College, this program provides a truly unique opportunity. Begin with a campus visit, enjoy lunch with university students and end the day visiting the botanical gardens and participating in a beach clean-up service project together.

Part I Campus Visit, Cultural Exchange session

  • SAS participants will be greeted by ALU student ambassadors at ALU’s campus in Pamplemousses, with coffee and Mauritian tea provided.
  • ALU students from South Africa, Ghana, and Morocco will give presentations on their home countries, with time for Q&A built into each presentation
    • Presentations will cover language, history, culinary traditions, and “what to expect” when they are on the ground

Part IILunch and “Image of Africa” conversation with ALU students

  • Enjoy lunch with ALU students on campus before departing for an off-campus group excursion. While students should feel free to connect and discuss any topics of mutual interest, the theme of this lunch will be the Image of Africa:
    • What is the image of Africa currently?
    • How do we change this image to reflect the reality of life on the continent?
    • How has your perception of this image changed since our cultural exchange this morning?
    • As world travelers, what is our impact on the stereotypical narrative?

Part IIIGroup Excursion.  SAS participants and ALU students will continue their learning and cultural exchange outside of the classroom on a “field trip” to SSR Botanical Gardens and Mont Choisy Beach. The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens are one of the greatest collections of flora on the island. Explore the expansive gardens with the ALU student hosts, before moving to Mont Choisy for a quintessential Mauritian beach experience. Finally, part of this beach afternoon will involve picking up trash at this popular tourist destination, which often ends up scattered around food trucks, and even in the ocean.

ALU students will then join SAS participants onboard the MV World Odyssey for dinner and for a tour (pending confirmation and subject to change.)
