In the morning, drive to Alleppey (~2 hours) to visit the ‘Preserve Alleppey Project’. This Society was started by the Lion Ladies Club of Alleppey in 2000 to address the urgent need to preserve the character of the town. The Society is dedicated to the preservation of Kerala’s natural, idyllic backwaters. On this program you will learn about the importance of this canal system and cover the ecology of the area and how its preservation has impacted the local environment

First, the Preserve Alleppey Society will lead you on a tour of the town. It starts with a presentation of the history and unique features of the town and ends at the Society’s gallery where refreshments are served. Rightly called the “Venice of the East”, Alleppey is crisscrossed by a network of canals. It is partly driving and walking through the Gujarati quarter, the canal banks, and an old wholesale market with a private guide. You will have the opportunity to visit a family home and enjoy an authentic Kerala meal featuring local tropical produce. This also provides visitors an opportunity to interact with Alleppey residents.

Kumarakom is a serenely beautiful and scenic backwater destination, a charming peninsula jutting into the effervescent Vembanad Lake. Dotted with traditional rice boats and canoes, Vembanad Lake creates a scene immensely pleasing to the eye. In the afternoon, embark your Kettuvellam (traditional houseboat) for a cruise of the backwaters.

We will spend the day leisurely navigating the canals and observing the daily rituals of river life.  We may see brightly-clad women washing their laundry along the river banks, children splashing around in the placid warm water, water buffalos grazing lazily, and farmers in the rice paddies.
