Baltic Sea takes home gold in the Spring 2018 Sea Olympics

Spring 2018 Baltic Sea claim number one spot in Sea Olympics

Sea Olympics saw a huge turnout in this semester as the seven seas went head-to-head to see who would come out on top as the Spring 2018 Sea Olympics champions.

Seas were riled up and ready to go during the opening ceremonies on February 16th. Seas tried to show up other seas with hype videos, chants and lots of spirit. Going into the competition, the Yellow Sea seemed favored to win as their spirit and camaraderie was unmatched to other seas. Despite this, most seas felt confident in their team members to win it all.

“I don’t know, I think the Bering Sea Bears are going to take it!” said Darren Gainza of the Bering Sea.

Voyagers participated in a wide range of events including a whip cream challenge, rap battle, basketball, synchronized swimming and much more. The closing ceremonies were highlighted with a lip sync battle from each sea.

“Over the course of the day, I have seen tons of spirit, creativity, athleticism, silliness; it was so much fun to witness and participate,” said Dana Ostermiller, physician.

When it came to really wanting the victory, Baltic Sea put their heart and soul into it.

“I am fighting a bad cold right now,” said Trevor Sess, Baltic Sea member after his synchronized swimming routine to “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” from The Lion King. “But, I wasn’t going to miss this and I know we killed it.”

While some students chose to participate in the challenges, other voyagers found different ways to show their sea pride. Yellow Sea member Ishan Bagaria witnessed the events from behind his DJ booth on the Deck 9 pool deck.

“I’ve been a DJ for a long time back home,” Bagaria said, “It’s such an honor to be here and DJ at sea.”

All seas gave it their all, but in the end, there could only be one champion. Baltic Sea came in at first place, followed closely by the Bering Sea and the White Sea (ship kids) taking third place. The Baltic Sea Lions will remain Sea Olympics victors until next semester’s games during the Fall 2018 voyage.
