PHIL 100 Appreciation of Philosophy [CRN 23107]
Overview of Course
Human beings everywhere and at all times have sought for wisdom, the knowledge that addresses our deepest questions and concerns. Philosophy is the “love of wisdom.” It is to be struck by the wonder of it all and muster the courage to pierce through everyday conventions to think for yourself about what matters most.
Living a human life is a lot like being on a ship at sea, sailing on top of a dark and deep mysterious ocean beneath an infinite sky. To philosophize is to wonder about life---about right and wrong, love and loneliness, truth and illusion, death and suffering, happiness and the meaning of life, the existence of God and the immortality of the soul…and a thousand other things.
To philosophize is to explore life. It means waking up to the mystery of existence and breaking free of ignorance in order to ask questions. It means resisting easy answers. To philosophize is to seek in oneself the courage to ask painful questions that need to be asked in order to lead a rich and meaningful life. As the great ancient Greek philosopher said, the unexamined life is not worth living. This course is an open invitation to begin examining your life with the help of seminal texts from different cultures of the world.
