PSY 300 Positive Psychology
Overview of Course
“Awe is the feeling we get when we encounter something vast that challenges our understanding of the world” wrote psychologist Dacher Keltner. You are invited to join this Positive Psychology course where we will explore the awe-inspiring power of personal growth and discovery. In this course we will cover the current research and theory pertaining to the study of strengths, flourishing, happiness, meaning, and well-being as well as cultural influences and environmental conditions that influence them. We will review the history, empirical support, research methods and most validated measures used in this field. As we visit different ports in Asia, Africa, and Europe, we will learn about the relationship between Eastern religions (like Taoism and Buddhism), emotion regulation (like decreasing anxiety and increasing peace and calm) and brain science. We will also experiment with Western methods of feeling good such as exercise, engagement, pleasure-seeking, relationships, achievement and purpose. Along the way, we will emphasize engaging with, and finding meaning in, the larger world around. By the end of the course, you will build out your own personal positive psychology toolkit that you will be able to draw on to help you navigate tough times. The classroom will be a place of respect, hands-on activities and active discussions. Classes will be engaging and active participation from students is expected. Get ready to set sail on an extraordinary journey of discovery and growth!
