Overview of Course

This course examines privilege and oppression from a global perspective, defining not only what privilege and oppression are, but also how they work together to form societies that benefit some, while placing others at a disadvantage. Throughout the voyage, learners will be asked to identify unjust policies and practices from one’s own culture, as well as, some from the countries visited on the voyage. Furthermore, learners will seek to create more just policies or amend or eradicate existing unfair ones. Using Peggy McIntosh’s “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” as a starting foundation, discussions will center around privileges that often go unnoticed or overlooked and how one can use their privileges to advocate for global change. Readings from a variety of authors from different backgrounds will be incorporated. Additionally, there will be both individual and group assignments to demonstrate the significance of working independently and collaboratively, in order to take on the task of dismantling privilege and oppression on an international level.
