Professor Preview – Meet Paul Doherty

Faculty on the Fall 2017 voyage of Semester at Sea, Paul Doherty is a professor in the Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology department at Colorado State University. He is excited to be a part of the upcoming voyage and will be teaching three different classes on the MV World Odyssey.

“I’ll be teaching Life 320: Ecology, NR 300: Biodiversity and an honors seminar HONR 293 which is titled, Knowing Cross Cultures: Wildlife Conservation Around the World,” Doherty said.

For every class on the ship, students are enrolled in a field course that takes them on in-country excursions corresponding with the teachings of that class. Doherty will be taking students to a South African penguin colony, a national park in Vietnam, and a predator-free zone in Hawaii.

“There’s wildlife in every country around the world and there’s wildlife conservation needs everywhere as well,” Doherty said. “Wherever we go we’re just going to have a great time, and when you think about biodiversity around the world we’re going to see a lot of neat species that a lot of students haven’t seen before.”

Doherty is most looking forward to the community bonds that are formed in austere environments like the MV World Odyssey, along with the opportunity to take students out on his field courses.

“Bring your binoculars, bring your camera, we’re going to see a lot of wildlife and of course meet some really neat people and all, too.” Doherty said. “My field trips aren’t necessarily in the city, we’re going to be heading out to the field, so if you like doing field biology then we’ll probably have a fun time together.”

Speaking of a fun time, Doherty would like all voyagers to note that he is a ping-pong master, so bring your A-game sasfa17!
