Student Learns About Her Greek Heritage On Her Study Abroad Visit

Written by: Marissa Geiger (Student)

The half way mark of this incredible voyage arrived in the blink of an eye, I had made it to Greece! And mom was there to meet me! I knew that we would have an unbelievable trip to Greece together, but I definitely under-estimated just how much fun we would have.

From the ancient ruins of Delphi to the present day Meteora of Kalambaka, our journey around Greece introduced us to a wide range of culture and tradition. We were also taken to Macedonia where we saw the Royal Tombs, witnessing the graves of famous historical figures such as Phillip and Alexander the Great. What amazed me the most was that the information about these people and their practices from thousands of years ago was able to be communicated and passed down to the point where archeologists were able to locate and uncover these ancient tombs. Aside from the educational components of the trip, we learned Greek dances late into the night, ate at an incredible vineyard overlooking cities in Greece, climbed to the top of the Acropolis to take pictures in front of the Parthenon and even had some free time to make up our own adventures.

I was able to visit my own relatives in Greece, which allowed our family to reconnect and recall memories of past generations and ancestors. Mom was able to communicate fantastically with the relatives and I know my Yiayia and Papou will be overjoyed to hear the stories she comes home with. Having Greek heritage I feel I was better able to appreciate the culture and history and connect pieces of my upbringing to its origin.

I am so happy that Semester at Sea not only set up a trip for parents but also set up a trip for parents in Greece! Being able to share a port on this incredible voyage with my mom was so special. The culture and heritage that I received from her were so alive here in the “home land” that I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. From the beautiful mountains and the incredible vineyards to delicious foods and friendly people, I loved everything about Greece! But what made it even better was that I was able to share this experience with my mother.
