The Need to Study the Ocean – Oceanography in Hilo

It has often been said that we know more about the surface of the moon than we know about the oceans. Dr. Ed Sobey, the President of the Northwest Innovation Center, teaches an Introduction to Oceanography course aboard the Spring 2013 Voyage. In this video, he explains why there is an immediate need for us to learn more about the oceans, which are so vitally important for our survival, yet under threat due to acidification, pollution, and overfishing.

With more knowledge about the oceans, we can start the understand what we can be done to mitigate these problems. And there is no better way to develop a life-long interest in the ocean than a first-hand experience.
