Atlantic Exploration: Embarkation Day, Halifax

The MV Explorer was full of energy and smiling faces as students from 45 states and 10 different countries embarked from Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 23, 2012, for the 111th voyage of Semester at Sea. Follow along with the students of Fall 2012: Atlantic Exploration as they board the ship and pull away from the harbor to sail 2,192 nautical miles to Galway, Ireland, just one of 14 countries they will explore this term.

Embarkation-01 — Andrew Brooks of High Point University boards the MV Explorer in Halifax for the Fall 2012 Atlantic Exploration.

Embarkation-02 — Emily Sandoval, Resident Director, guides Brayden Beverage of University of California San Diego through the check-in process.

Embarkation-03 — Amanda Bateson of Montana State (top left), Jordan Fowler of University of Virginia (top right), Andrew Anabi and Dylan Bonfigli, both of University of San Diego (middle), complete check-in prior to moving into their cabins, while many others wait in line (bottom).

Embarkation-04 — Ground and ship crews move nearly a thousand pieces of luggage onto the ship.

Embarkation-05 — Sean Hans of Clemson University and Jack Harvey of University Of Colorado Boulder make introductions for the first time while moving into their cabin.

Embarkation-06 — Parents and students wave goodbye to each other as the *MV Explorer* pushes off from the port in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Embarkation-07 — As the ship sails east towards Ireland, the western sun casts shadows on bow of 7th Deck.

Embarkation-08 — Executive Dean John Tymitz (top) and Captain Roman Krstanovic (bottom) welcome 474 students, 36 faculty, and 33 staff aboard the ship, and testify to the adventures ahead.
