Since 2018, over 50 Cal Poly students have embarked on transformative global voyages with Semester at Sea (SAS). Through this partnership, Cal Poly continues to empower its students to become innovative problem-solvers and global citizens. Will you be on our next voyage?

California Polytechnic Study Abroad Programs
Cal Poly’s International Center offers an impressive array of nearly 500 approved study abroad programs across more than 75 countries, including multi-country options. Students can choose from a variety of program types, such as approved partner programs (like Semester at Sea), international exchanges, faculty-led trips, and more.
Cal Poly Study Abroad aims to provide all students with access to international education opportunities in both traditional and non-traditional locations. Their extensive selection of programs ensures that students from all disciplines have the opportunity to gain invaluable global experiences.
California Polytechnic & Semester at Sea
Semester at Sea’s commitment to offering a broad, inclusive learning environment complements Cal Poly’s mission to prepare students for success in a global economy. Semester at Sea is a valued partner program of Cal Poly and mirrors the university’s dedication to diversity, inclusion, and global comparative study.
Many of the courses offered by Semester at Sea are approved by Cal Poly, and will count toward a student’s degree. Engineering majors at Cal Poly will be happy to know that the SAS curriculum offers several approved engineering courses, providing a unique opportunity to advance your studies while exploring the world.

Admission Requirements
Cal Poly students who wish to embark on a SAS voyage must:
- Receive approval from Cal Poly to participate in Semester at Sea.
- Pay a $200 International Travel Fee to Cal Poly.
- Enroll in foreign travel insurance, which may be purchased by the student or by the department/division sponsoring the trip.
- Be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
Start the process as early as you can, and pay close attention to deadlines!
Financial Aid
Did you know that over 60% of Semester at Sea voyagers use some form of financial aid? Cal Poly students may fund their voyage using any financial aid for which they are eligible, as long as the application of funds is approved by either the provider or Cal Poly.
Cal Poly offers multiple scholarships for study abroad, including one specifically for Semester at Sea! Students may receive anywhere from $500–$2,500 to help fund their voyage.
Students may also explore other Semester at Sea scholarships, or utilize any of the following federal funding sources:
- Direct PLUS Loan
- Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
- Pell Grant (SAS will match)
- Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
