ECON 202 Principles of Microeconomics
Overview of Course
Microeconomics is all about understanding the decisions we make—whether as consumers, firms, or governments—and how those decisions shape the world around us. In this course, we’ll explore how individuals make choices based on market changes, policies, and shifting preferences, and how businesses decide what to produce, how to produce it, and for whom. From the impact of technology and labor availability to the effects of government policies, we’ll investigate the forces that drive economic decision-making.
As we sail from port to port, we’ll dive into real-world case studies and local data to see how different countries tackle economic challenges. How do market forces and policies in each country impact consumer behavior? How do firms respond to economic conditions, and how do these decisions influence global trade, job markets, and public welfare? You’ll also examine the limitations of markets—such as pollution, monopolies, and incomplete information—and explore how policies can correct these failures.
This course is perfect for students who want to understand how economics shapes the world’s most pressing issues—from climate change to inequality. By the end of the semester, you’ll be equipped to think critically about the economic forces at play in the countries we visit, and how those forces impact both consumers and producers on a global scale. Whether you're interested in policy, global trade, or just want to understand the forces that shape everyday life, this course offers a practical, hands-on approach to microeconomics in action.
