Spring 2024 | Asia, Africa, and Europe Exploration

HES 145 Health and Wellness [CRN 22360]

Overview of Course

Health is the state of being free from illness, disease, or injury. Yet, this simple statement proves controversial with important questions to answer through our voyage including: the role of prevention in personal and community well-being? What steps are involved in healing processes? What’s the difference between fitness, exercise, and mobility and why does this matter? What is the role of sleep, nutrition, relationships, and adverse childhood experiences in our own personal well-being during the Spring 2024? Holistic approaches to health and wellness will be integrated within course objectives and represent a synthesis of concepts drawn from biological, behavioral, sociological, and health sciences. Furthermore, traditional health practices from around the world will be used to examine human needs, health values, and human potential through creative community engagement and embodied anatomy. Students will understand and express their values about health and wellness through open communication regarding social determinants of health, dimensions of wellness, community health concerns, and global factors that impact well-being.
