JTC 100 Media in Society [CRN 22349]

Overview of Course

This course explores the powerful and pervasive influence of media on modern society. We will begin by contextualizing mass media through a historical framework, both in the United States, and in the regions we will visit on our voyage. As we reflect on the ethical and global immediacy of communication in the digital age, students will analyze and research the opportunities and the dangers of a world with invisible gatekeepers. Students will examine the multi-dimensional relationship between creators and audiences, and the increasing need for cultural awareness in a world where digital teams collaborate from anywhere and publish everywhere. We will discuss the ongoing battle between information, misinformation, and disinformation, and the complicated nature of truth and perspective. Upon completion, students will gain increased media analysis skills, improved writing and research skills, and a sharper focus on their personal media perspective.
