JTC 430 Advanced Documentary Photography [CRN 22351 and 22352]
Overview of Course
This is an advanced hands-on course in the conceptualization and creation of transmedia blog posts as the voyage progresses that combine photography, videography, and text. Course content will analyze conceptual, photographic, and editing criteria for the creative transmedia documentation of people, places, and themes experienced during our adventure. After port visits on the voyage, students will submit a multimedia blog post focused on their personal experiences while traveling in that nation. Students will be guided by the instructor and peers in the course to create meaningful posts that highlight new cultural knowledge based on interactions with local citizens and fellow students. Ethical issues concerning the documentation of overseas populations will be addressed, as well as the need to obtain permission to film in some sensitive religious locations on the voyage. Near the end of the voyage, students will exhibit their best work in an evening class exhibition for the entire ship’s company to attend. As the voyage progresses, students will also be invited to submit their best stories for potential posting on the Semester at Sea website, accessible worldwide.
