NRRT 270 Tourism and Recreation for People and the Planet
Overview of Course
NRRT 270 offers an adventure in which the world serves as a living classroom. As we sail across seas, students explore one of the world’s most powerful industries—driving 10% of global GDP—and its role in shaping environments, cultures, and economies.
We will move beyond passive travel to evaluate the sustainability of global natural-resource tourism strategies and analyze the socioeconomic impacts on diverse host communities. The course delves into the "tourist gaze," analytical methods, gender in tourism, and critiques of how destinations manage overtourism and resource conservation. You will examine your own motivations and ethical responsibilities, evolving into reflexive global citizens.
In line with our Voyage Learning Outcomes, this course fosters interconnectedness and respect for the inherent dignity of every community visited. We will not just study industry problems; we will design innovative solutions and create original products that synthesize field observations with theory. This journey develops the competencies necessary to lead in a global context and shape a sustainable future for both people and the planet. This course is designed for those ready to change how they see the world and to have fun while doing it.
