Overview of Course

Since the Rio 1992 conference, international efforts have been made to develop tourism as a means of sustainable livelihoods at local, regional, and national levels. By promoting sustainable travel and tourism, we can work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reducing poverty while fostering sustainable development. Developing sustainable tourism during SAS visits requires innovation on various levels, including conceptual, process, and product. This course examines the role of governmental, business, and third-sector organizations in sustainable tourism and associated trends and issues related to the SDGs. We will explore case studies from the countries visited during the voyage and discuss instruments for sustainable tourism development. We will also discuss and apply methods and techniques to reconcile different interests in various contexts, including urban and rural areas from the north to the south and from the east to the west. The central issues we will cover are sustainability, globalization, and intervention strategies.
