Global Studies serves as the academic core of a Semester at Sea voyage in four vital ways. First, Global Studies presents foundational information on the geography and traditions, history and current events of each port of call through a series of dynamic and engaging lectures to the entire shipboard community. Second, Global Studies connects diverse ports together through global themes like international security, the legacies of colonialism, and the challenges of human development: diverse scholarly approaches to these issues are introduced through article-length readings which students discuss in several student-success meetings outside of lecture, and incorporate into two short position papers addressing a current global problem. Third, Global Studies fosters intercultural competence, highlighting various dimensions of culture through mini-lectures, self-assessment, and small-group discussions. Finally, Global Studies encourages voyagers to apply skills and knowledge to Field Experiences eligible for course credit.
