Global Studies is an introduction to living in our global home. It is an opportunity to prepare to get the most out of each port visit, and also the place to put the pieces together – to go beyond isolated “snapshots” of places and cultures and to begin to think about global interconnectedness. As such it is both analytical and very practical.

We will explore the multiple dimensions of our globalized world: the environmental, the political and economic and the socio-cultural. The focus is on the local-global connection and the personal-structural connection. What are the major forces reshaping our world, but also how can we thrive and flourish as global travelers, and work together across cultures as engaged global citizens?

For each port we will look at the heritage: cultural and historical foundations of the society. We will explore the challenges of inclusion, equity and social justice. And we will look at the economic and environmental challenges for the future. An emphasis on intercultural communication and understanding will help prepare you for each port experience, and more importantly, for living and thriving in a multicultural world.
