From a Thousand Eyes: Spain

“From a Thousand Eyes” is a four-part series on the Summer 2014 voyage that depicts our ports from the viewpoint of the participants. Here, students and Lifelong Learners share their stunning imagery in and around Bilbao, Spain.

The Spanish town of Bermeo is one of the most active fishing communities in the Basque area. Situated in a non-tourist area, it can easily be seen that during their time of siesta, the town comes alive with people peering out their windows, enjoying a late lunch by the water, or even flying down the narrow streets by motorcycle. Church of the Holy Family known as La Sagrada Familia is one of the most beautiful Roman Catholic churches and is located in Barcelona, Spain. Its fame comes from its unique and prominent gothic style, designed by the legendary architect Antoni Gaudi. This church has been under construction for 132 years and it is expected to be completed in 2016. Photo by Ida Ayu Kusumastuti of At right: After a field program horseback riding on the beach, students were given time to explore the scenic city of Soplena. Unlike modern Bilbao, this ancient port city had many beautiful ruins and historic buildings to explore. Photo by Katie Rizzo.
