Interport Lecturer: Mediterranean Piracy

Interport Lecturers will be boarding the MV Explorer at different points along our journey to help prepare the SAS community for what we will encounter in our upcoming ports of call. Josh White, our first interport lecturer, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia. He studies and teachers the history of the medieval and early-modern Mediterranean and Middle East with a particular focus on the social, legal, and diplomatic history of the early Ottoman Empire. Professor White’s current book project, titled “Catch and Release: Piracy, Slavery, and Law in the Early-Modern Ottoman Mediterranean” is a study of the Ottoman response to the rising piracy in the Mediterranean during the late 16th and 17th Century and forms the basis of this lecture.
