Global Pop Field Lab: A Day of Old to New

These Croatian musicians are in period dress and play Klapa music for Professor Ciucci’s Global Pop music class. All the songs being played today for the students have a common theme of love.
In the Konavle region, just a short drive outside Dubrovnik, students listen to folk music played by traditional musicians from the area. The students field lab focuses on different categories of folk and popular music, and the influences they have had from the different regions around the Mediterranean.
Students in Professor Ciucci’s Global Pop class, have been studying the differences in folk and pop music. Most of the folk music is from local musicians, where as western art (pop music) is heavily influenced by jazz from the United States and Europe.
Maria Cartolano from University of Miami, Holly Whitway from University of Miami and Shawn Speeney from University of North Carolina, Charlotte, listen to a street musician play his hybrid folk music, which has clearly been influenced by modern sounds. Their class assignment is to sample local music and talk with people about the music in the area.
The Dubrovnik Summer Festival in Croatia hosts 40 days of theater, opera , music, and dance at various open-air venues around the city. The student’s first day in Dubrovnik coincides with the kickoff of this festival.
Fireworks over the old city mark the opening ceremony of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Students explore the vast array of cultural music and mix with locals as they take part in this event.
