ISE Welcomes Back Familiar Faces for its Growing Advancement

The Institute for Shipboard Education welcomes four recent additions to its advancement department team: Dr. Dan Garvey, Adam Seid, Brittany Palmer, and Lane Crawford. With these new hires is the promotion of Melissa Bingler from Director of Advancement Services & Research Systems to Assistant Vice President of Advancement.

Assuming the role as Vice President of Advancement, Dr. Dan Garvey brings a wide range of experience and accolades. Garvey is no stranger to Semester at Sea, having sailed a total of five voyages from 1984 – 2014 and has served as the voyage Dean of Students, Executive Dean, and faculty member. Additionally, he maintains his title as the Vice President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors at ISE. Dan joined the ISE team in March following his retirement from a ten-year stay as President of Prescott College in Arizona. Dan is a recipient of the University of New Hampshire School of Health Studies 1998 Outstanding Teaching Award, the 1997 Kurt Hahn Award, and the 2002 Julian Smith Award. He holds a Ph.D. in Social and Multi-Cultural Foundations from the University of Colorado, Boulder and has penned more than 25 books and articles covering experiential education in his career. ISE is honored to have Dan join the advancement team in this leadership role.

Recently coming off of the Fall 2014 voyage as a staff member, Adam Seid was appointed Director of Annual Giving this spring. Adam has sailed on several voyages as a student and staff member. He rejoins ISE after serving various roles in the formerly named Admissions and Academic Affairs department from 2008 to 2011. Before assuming the role of Director of Annual Giving, Adam was working in higher education consulting and leading student leadership programs to China. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia where he received a degree in journalism. In addition to his multiple voyages with Semester at Sea, Adam has traveled to over 70 countries around the world.

Brittany Palmer also rejoins ISE as the Assistant Director of Advancement Services after her previous role as International Student Advisor at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Brittany’s prior ISE experiences include interning as a graduate assistant for program administration, student affairs, and enrollment; Lifelong Learner coordinator; and field office coordinator of the 2013 – 2014 Enrichment Voyage. Brittany’s passion for Semester at Sea began after her Summer 2010 student voyage.

Lane Crawford also rejoins the Institute as the Database Manager. She previously served as Assistant Director of Gift Records in 2013. Lane’s career focus has been development and database management for fundraising offices and nonprofits. She holds a B.A. in sociology from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC and has rejoined ISE after working for Arbor Hospice as a Development Data and Research Specialist in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Institute is thrilled to have Dan, Adam, Brittany, and Lane join Melissa Bingler and Kathy Pond, Director of Parent Engagement, to foster engagement within the Semester at Sea community and provide support to future voyagers.
