The Institute for Shipboard Education is pleased to announce Dr. Scott Marshall as the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Marshall brings with him a strong background in academic leadership and a dedication to international and experiential learning, having taught numerous courses abroad in Serbia, Cambodia, Nepal, and Thailand, in addition to sailing as a professor on the Spring 2017 Voyage of Semester at Sea.
Dr. Marshall describes why he wants to work with Semester at Sea: “Semester at Sea is uniquely positioned as a premier study abroad experience. Its commitment to global citizenship and experiential learning inspires me and all who work for Semester at Sea. Participating as a faculty member on the Spring 2017 Voyage was simply amazing. The students were terrific; the faculty were wonderful. It far exceeded my expectations for my own personal and professional growth.”
Dr. Marshall comes to Semester at Sea from Portland State University where he served most recently as Vice Provost for Academic & Fiscal Planning. With a B.A. in Business Economics from Willamette University, an M.A. in International Affairs from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in International Strategy from the University of Oregon, he is a full professor with an active publication record of articles, book chapters and award-winning case studies. He taught a number of international business, entrepreneurship, and sustainability courses throughout his tenure at Portland State while designing a new Master of Science program and incorporating international experiential learning into the MBA program.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs position will continue to work closely with colleagues at Colorado State University (CSU) to maintain the strong academic focus of the program. Dr. Marshall looks forward to working with CSU and other Semester at Sea partners. “CSU is the ideal partner for Semester at Sea. It is strategically dedicated to interdisciplinary models for teaching and research and internationalization. The CSU faculty and staff I met on the Spring 2017 Voyage were genuinely committed to the success of the CSU-SAS partnership. I am very excited to work collaboratively with the CSU leadership and faculty as well as with Bob Kling, the new Senior Academic Officer. But most importantly, I look forward to working day to day with the SAS team ‚Äì a great group of people with the drive continuously to improve the wonder that is SAS.”
