Student Photo Gallery: Singapore

After rubbing elbows with container ships and cruise ships while plying through the world’s fifth busiest port, the MV Explorer docked in the island country of Singapore. Voyagers spent two days exploring the 276 square mile island country. Students trained their lenses on the rich diversity found in the country and were fascinated by the contrast of the modern and historic in this country of over five million people.

Josiah Savig from Colorado State University took this photo of a macaw during a visit to the Jurong Bird Park as part of a Semester at Sea Field Program. “After taking this photo, the macaw flew off to bring another friend and began eating the food out of my hands!”
Ivy Guild from the University of San Diego felt that Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, more commonly known as the Avatar Gardens, captured Singapore’s essence: “The forest of blue trees provided the perfect visual representation of the modern society that Singapore has become–beautiful, clean, and new-age.”
Monika Ireland from Sullivan University visited Singapore’s Chinatown, which she recalls as being the highlight of her time in Singapore. “I was impressed by the kindness and pride this lady expressed through her cooking. We found ourselves back at her stand later in the day, and we agreed her food was among the best we’ve had thus far on the voyage.”
Rebecca Isaak from Queens University had the opportunity to go inside Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple which houses a unique statue of the elephant-headed deity Lord Vinayagar. It is said that this statue is likely the only one of its kind in the world.
During Semester at Sea’s Night Safari Field Program, Josiah Savig from Colorado State University came across a fire breathing performance at the Singapore Zoo. “The flames engulfed the performers as they seemingly effortlessly twirled their rods to a heavy and dynamic drum rhythm. It was incredible how they managed to keep their bodies unscathed, especially when they exhaled flames twice their body length from their lips.”
Jessica Mercier from the College of Charleston visited Sentosa beach, a nature and adventure resort created on an artificial island known for its designation as the “southernmost point of continental Asia”. Singapore has expanded its land reclamation projects in the past decade as it strives to maximize its limited geographical footprint.
Singapore’s architecture is a mosaic of the various cultures that form the nation. This villa found by Spencer Calligar of High Point University is a great example of the multiculturalism in Singapore, as it is a mix of Chinese and European architectural styles and it is located in the middle of the Little India neighborhood.
Robert Bittaker from the University of San Diego snapped this photo of our adopted home, the MV Explorer, from the gondola connecting Singapore’s main island with Sentosa, a nature and adventure resort created on an artificial island.
