Support Semester at Sea By Using AmazonSmile

Semester at Sea recently became a member of AmazonSmile, a charitable leg of online shopping website Amazon. AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for shoppers to support their favorite charitable organization every time they shop, at no cost to the shopper. Amazon shoppers can now support SAS by selecting the Institute for Shipboard Education as their selected charity. With each purchase, .5% of the item price will be donated towards ISE.

When shopping at smile.amazon.com, shoppers find the same prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to the shopper’s favorite charitable organization. There are nearly 1 million charitable organizations to choose from while shopping with AmazonSmile.

The ISE membership with AmazonSmile came about when Craig Isaacs and Joshua Lewis, both members of the Alumni Association Board of Directors for the Institute of Shipboard Education, were brainstorming ways to increase revenue for the organization. Having recently arranged for another cause to create a membership with AmazonSmile, Isaacs presented the idea to the ISE council and it was met with great enthusiasm. The AmazonSmile Semester at Sea account is now live and accessible to the public.

Isaacs sailed as a student with Semester at Sea on the Fall 1983 voyage, the Queen Mary Reunion Voyage in the 1980s, the 2010 and 2014 Reunion Voyages, and the 2007 Tymitz Retirement Voyage. Isaacs and a few of his peers on the Fall 1983 voyage left their legacy on a plaque featured on the gangway which reads: “Pass with open eyes, open hearts, and open minds. And DON’T miss the boat!”

Isaacs explains that the impact that Semester at Sea had on him was significant. “[Semester at Sea] provided a platform for international business, as I quickly lobbied for and gained access to international business relationships when I was 25,” said Issacs. “From then on, I’ve worked to maintain a global outlook for my business.”

Lewis sailed with Semester at Sea for the first time on the Spring 2013 voyage with his wife, and plans to sail again soon.
